Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean , is the Disney premium worth it?

Disney Cruise Line just doubled its fleet, Wish, Treasure, Destiny, and the upcoming Adventure, while Royal Caribbean launched Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, the two largest cruise ships ever built. Both target families, both charge a premium for it, and the price gap between them is the question we get asked most by parents in 2026. Here's how they actually compare.

    • Which One Is For You

    Who wins, by traveler.

    Families with kids under 10

    Pick: Disney Cruise Line

Nothing else comes close. Character meet-and-greets, Oceaneer Club themed play spaces, rotational dining with the same servers, and the smoothest under-10 programming at sea. Worth the premium if Disney magic matters to your family.

Families with tweens (10–14) and teens

    Pick: Royal Caribbean

Royal's tween and teen spaces are the best at sea, dedicated club decks, social programming, and the activity menu (FlowRider, ice skating, rock climbing, Category 6 water park) keeps older kids actually engaged for a full week.

    Multigenerational groups (grandparents to toddlers)

    Pick: Royal Caribbean

Bigger ships mean more space for everyone to find their thing, quiet Solarium for grandparents, water park for kids, casino and bars for parents, teen club for the older ones. Disney ships are smaller and skew younger.

    Disney-loyal households

    Pick: Disney Cruise Line

If your family does Disney World annually, the cruise extends the magic at sea with the same storytelling, theming, and character access. It's a different vacation, not a price comparison.

    Value-minded families

    Pick: Royal Caribbean

A 7-night Royal Caribbean family cabin runs $150–$280 per person nightly. The same week on Disney runs $280–$550 per person. For a family of four, that's a $4,000–$8,000 swing, enough to add a Disney World trip on top of a Royal cruise.

Couples without kids who still want a big ship

    Pick: Royal Caribbean

Disney's adult areas are good but the ship culture is family-first. Royal Caribbean has more adult bars, casino, Solarium, and specialty restaurants, plus better suite-class options for adults-only travel.

    Foodies

    Pick: Royal Caribbean

Disney has Palo and Remy (both excellent, both adults-only) but only 2 specialty venues per ship. Royal Caribbean offers 8–14 specialty restaurants, Chops, Izumi, Wonderland, Empire Supper Club, Hooked Seafood, for far broader variety.

    • Common Questions

    Frequently asked.

Is Disney Cruise Line worth the extra money over Royal Caribbean?
If your kids are under 10 and your family loves Disney, yes, the immersive character experiences, rotational dining, Oceaneer Club, and Broadway-caliber theater justify the 40–80% premium. If your kids are tweens or teens, or your family isn't deeply Disney-loyal, Royal Caribbean delivers more activity, more variety, and a much better per-dollar value.
Which is better for toddlers, Disney or Royal Caribbean?
Disney Cruise Line is meaningfully better for toddlers and pre-school children. The 'It's a Small World Nursery' takes infants from 6 months, the Oceaneer Club is themed (Marvel Super Hero Academy, Frozen Adventures, Star Wars: Millennium Falcon), and characters appear throughout the ship. Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean is excellent but less story-driven for the youngest age group.
Which cruise line has the better kids' club for ages 10–14?
Royal Caribbean, by a wide margin. Royal's dedicated tween (10–11) and teen (12–17) spaces are the best at sea, with their own decks, lounges, social programming, and tech. Disney's Edge (tweens) and Vibe (teens) are good but smaller, and tweens often outgrow Disney character programming.
Are drinks and gratuities included on Disney or Royal Caribbean?
Neither. Both lines charge separately for alcoholic beverages and add automatic daily gratuities ($16–$18 per person per day). Disney includes soft drinks at the main dining rooms and buffet (Royal does not), but a bottle of wine or a cocktail package is extra on both. Compare total trip cost, not just base fare, when planning your investment.
Is Castaway Cay or Perfect Day at CocoCay better?
Both are excellent and serve different families. Castaway Cay (Disney's Bahamas private island) is calmer, more curated, and includes character appearances and themed dining. Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal's island) is the most thrill-packed private island at sea, the Thrill Waterpark, Coco Beach Club, zip line, and Oasis Lagoon make it a destination in itself. Disney = relaxed family day. Royal = adventure park day.
