Emerald, Ama and Avalon: same price, different trip
A couple in their 50s came to me wanting their first river cruise. They asked for options, so I priced 3: Emerald, AmaWaterways and Avalon, all on the Danube for next July.
The quotes came back within a few hundred dollars of each other.
That surprised them. It surprises almost everyone. There's an assumption that the more a line includes, the more you pay for it, and that's not how this one played out.
Where the real gap showed up
Gratuities. Emerald builds them into the fare. Ama and Avalon generally don't, so they come out of your pocket at the end of the week.
On a 7-night sailing for 2 people, that's roughly $200 to $250 that never appeared on the quote you were comparing.
Airport transfers were the other one. Emerald covers those both ways as standard. On the other 2, transfers usually ride along with a pre or post cruise package, which is fine if you're buying one and a separate line item if you're not.
Load those back in and the "similar" prices stop being similar.
The room and the pool
They liked the room size. For the same money, the Emerald stateroom they landed on was bigger than what the other 2 quotes put them in.
River ship cabins run small across the whole category, and you're living in that one for 7 nights. First-timers underestimate how much that matters until they're in it.
Then there's the pool. Emerald's river ships have a heated indoor pool at the back with a retractable roof, and at night the space converts into a cinema.
That's the thing that closed it. They probably won't swim laps on the Danube. But the pool told them what kind of ship they were getting, and Emerald's fleet is newer than most of what's on the river right now.
What Ama and Avalon still do better
I've sailed Ama myself, and I'd still send the right client there. Their food and wine program is the strongest thing they do. If dining is the actual reason someone's cruising, that's a real argument.
Avalon prices lower on plenty of sailings and runs promotions constantly, including ones that prepay the gratuities and close the exact gap I just described. If a client is flexible on dates, that's worth watching.
These are 3 good lines, each its own product, built for different people. The job is knowing which person is sitting across from you.
One honest thing about Emerald
Included drinks are wine, beer and soft drinks at lunch and dinner. The bar outside of mealtimes runs on a tab or a drinks package.
If a client tells me an all-day open bar matters, I point them at Scenic, Emerald's sister line, which includes that plus butler service and prices accordingly.

Depends on what you want the week to feel like. Emerald for a newer ship with the fewest add-ons at the end. Ama if food and wine are the point. Avalon if you're chasing a promotion and your dates are flexible.
What to do with this
If you're comparing river lines right now, get all 3 priced with gratuities, transfers and excursions loaded in before you decide anything. The fares look interchangeable until somebody does that.
