What an AmaWaterways Christmas Markets cruise actually is
Each year from mid-November through late December, AmaWaterways repositions its newest 156-guest river ships onto a tightly themed Christmas Markets schedule. The most popular routing is the seven-night Danube sailing between Vilshofen and Budapest — Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest — and a similar Rhine routing between Basel and Cologne or Amsterdam.
The ship docks in or near the old town in almost every port. You step off after lunch or before dinner, walk five or ten minutes into a candlelit square, and you're in it: hand-blown glass ornaments, gingerbread, mulled wine in a souvenir mug, choirs of schoolchildren, the smell of roasting chestnuts. Then you walk back to a warm ship for dinner. That is the trip.
Who it's best for
Couples celebrating an anniversary, friend groups doing a once-a-year trip together, and first-time river cruisers who want atmosphere more than they want a checklist of museums. Multi-generational groups travel well on this itinerary too — the pace is gentle, the ports are walkable, and grandparents and grandchildren both light up at the markets.
Less ideal for travelers who need warm weather, all-day shore excursions, or a packed schedule of optional activities. Daylight in central Europe in late November is short. The ship leans into that — you tend to do one focused morning tour, then have all afternoon and evening for the markets.

All onboard meals, breakfast through late-evening bites. Complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, plus a welcome cocktail and sip-and-sail wines. A guided shore excursion in every port — usually three pace options per day (gentle walking, regular pace, active hike or bike). Complimentary use of onboard bicycles ashore. Wi-Fi throughout the ship. Shore-excursion guide gratuities.
Typically not included: international airfare, pre- and post-cruise hotel nights, optional small-group excursions, onboard crew gratuities (~€16 per person per day, prepayable), and spa or hair-salon services. A good advisor will price the all-in number, not the headline cabin fare.
Christmas Markets vs spring or summer AmaWaterways
Spring (April Tulip Time on the Rhine, May Wachau bloom) and summer (long daylight, warm evenings on deck) are the bright, expansive AmaWaterways sailings. Christmas Markets is the intimate, atmospheric one.
If you care about photography of vineyards and castles in golden light, sail May or September. If you care about the feeling of walking into a 600-year-old square at dusk and hearing carols in a language you don't quite speak, sail late November. There is no wrong answer — they are different trips on the same ships.
